ATP synthase

The proton electrochemical gradient represents the force which drives the ATP synthase enzyme which producing ATP from ADP + P if the proton concentration is greater in the lower compartment on this simulation. On the other hand, if the proton concentration gradient is reversed, the enzyme hydrolyses the ATP and at the same time pumps the protons against their electrochemical gradient.
